On Sunday, I took a friend to the Oakland Zoo.
My friend had never visited this zoo before, and she was pleasantly surprised by how spacious many of the habitats were. She was afraid that the Oakland Zoo might be one of those melancholy zoos with where the animals looked depressed in their cramped cages. Fortunately, the animals here were able to roam around in their man made environments.
A couple of the exhibits, like the bison exhibit, could only be seen while riding the aerial tram, which costed $3 on top of the normal park entrance fee.
We only saw one male elephant, but apparently there are a couple of females too.
When I last visited the zoo, there was very little activity in the bat cage. So during this visit, I was fascinated to watch the bats eating and spreading their wings to sun themselves. The bats used their hooked feet to “walk” around their perches, which reminded me a lot of the climbing net in Super Mario.
A pair of binoculars would have been a great to better view the lions or the tigers. I’ll have to come prepared the next time I visit!
